Welcome Fall - A Checklist for Fall Maintenance

Autumn is here…

Fall has arrived along with all the tell-tale signs of the season: mums, maple donuts, Fall festivals and,of course, everything pumpkin. It’s also a great time of year to get your home ready for winter and, for sale, if you’re contemplating a spring move.

Here is a checklist to get you started on Fall Maintenance items. Start with outdoor items while the weather is still so enjoyable.

Outdoors:

  • Power wash siding and walk ways Close and drain hose bibs.

  • Rake leaves and aerate lawn. Alexandria Leaf Collection.

  • Clean out gutters, downspout elbows, and check for roof leaks.

  • Check foundation and repair any cracks.

  • Clean around air conditioner compressor.

  • Trim any trees or shrubs that touch house.

  • Inspect and replace weatherstripping; re-caulk if needed.

  • Repair torn screens; inspect and clean storm windows.

  • Clean under decks and porches.

  • Inspect seals and clean out basement window wells.

  • Check external lights, especially by stairs; replace burnt out bulbs.

  • Run all gas-powered lawn equipment until the fuel is gone.

  • Check the dryer vent to make sure it is clear.

Indoors:

  • Clean and reverse the ceiling fans so the blades push air up instead of down.

  • Replace batteries in the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

  • Test alarms to be sure they are working properly.

  • Replace air filters in furnace. Have furnace inspected by a professional.

  • Adjust thermostat settings for fall/winter temperatures.

  • Stock emergency supplies in case the power (and heat) goes out.

  • Have fireplace chimney inspected and cleaned if necessary.

  • Fire extinguisher is fully charged.

  • Vacuum lint from dryer.

  • Have windows cleaned.

  • Clean carpets if needed.

  • Check for minor repairs needed - such as a squeaky door, loose handle, dripping faucet, etc.
